Why do my wisdom teeth need to be removed?
A wisdom tooth extraction is typically done to correct an existing problem, such as pain or infection, or to prevent future oral health problems.
Erupting wisdom teeth, often cause a number of issues. Your jaw may not be large enough to accommodate the number of teeth. Wisdom teeth then become impacted and are unable to break through your gums, or partially erupt, causing a flap of tissue to grow over them, risking an infection.
Impacted wisdom teeth are at significant risk for cavities, infection, and damage to jaw bone and other teeth, or a cyst. They are best removed at a young age. Wisdom teeth removed before age 20 have less developed roots and fewer complications.
